Starting July 2, 2026, Orillia residents will enjoy an enhanced residential recycling program, including processing all materials in a single recycling cart. Recycling collection takes place every two weeks.

This widely used automatic recycling cart program is an easy and safe solution to managing your recycling at home. The new carts will be delivered to households starting in June, and residents can start using them from July 2, 2026.

“The automated single-cart system, already in use in Simcoe County and other communities across Ontario, provides a convenient way for residents to manage the recycling they collect using carts with sufficient capacity and no need to separate materials,” said Orillia Mayor Don McIsaac. “We know that change can be difficult, but we are confident that residents will appreciate the benefits of this modernized approach to recycling management.”

Program development

  • The new recycling carts will be delivered to households starting June 2026. Deliveries will continue throughout June.
  • Single-stream recycling, which puts all recycled materials in one cart, will change from weekly to bi-weekly. There are no changes to the recycling collection days.
  • The latest biweekly collection schedule will be available at circularmaterials.ca/Orillia ahead of the new program starting in July.
  • Collection will begin on July 2, 2026, after Canada Day.
  • Residents will need to continue using their current recycling containers and bags until the cart program begins in July.
  • Residents can see a complete list of materials accepted for recycling at circularmaterials.ca/RecycleOntario. Circular Materials has introduced a consolidated and expanded list of materials for Ontario starting January 1, 2026. This means Ontario residents can recycle more materials more easily.

“We are pleased to offer an enhanced and convenient recycling program to Orillia residents, and we are confident that these enhancements will lead to increased recycling rates,” said Allen Langdon, CEO of Circular Materials.

“We are committed to delivering tangible results that benefit residents, communities and the environment as we continue to advance Ontario’s new blue box recycling program, including the introduction of new materials that are acceptable for recycling. We appreciate the City of Orillia’s continued engagement and collaboration and thank Orillia residents for their participation and involvement in the residential recycling program.”

Cart size and automatic collection process

The new recycling cart has a capacity of 360 litres, reflecting the average amount of recycling generated by households across Ontario. Emterra Environmental, a recycling collection service provider in Orillia, uses automated collection trucks to safely service carts and eliminate the need for drivers to get out of their vehicles to manually empty carts.

If the larger 360 liter cart does not meet your household recycling needs, residents can pre-order a smaller 240 liter cart to be delivered in place of the 360 liter cart. Residents can pre-order Circular Materials mini carts starting April 1 at circularmaterials.ca/OrilliaCarts. Orders must be placed by May 1, 2026.

Each cart delivered includes information on how to properly set it up for collection.

Information for residents

Information postcards will be mailed to residents around mid-April. The postcard will include the cart delivery period, program start date, details on how to order a smaller cart if needed, and general recycling tips.

Circular Materials and the City will support residents through the program’s rollout using online resources located at circularmaterials.ca/Orillia. Additional activities include advertising on social media, radio and local newspapers to ensure residents are well informed.
