The United States and Israel have attacked medical facilities multiple times during the course of their war against Iran.<\/p>\n
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday appealed to international health organizations to respond to attacks on Iranian medical facilities, including the Pasteur Institute in the capital Tehran. The facility was the main center that Iranian officials said was targeted the same day.<\/p>\n
At least 2,076 people have been killed and 26,500 injured in Iran since the United States and Israel first attacked the country on February 28.<\/p>\n
Let’s take a closer look at how the US and Israel attacked Iranian medical facilities.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Pezeshkian wrote in an X post: “What message does attacking Iranian hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and the Institut Pasteur, a medical research center, send?”<\/p>\n
The 71-year-old Iranian president, who is a cardiac surgeon by profession, continued: [the World Health Organization]the Red Cross, M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res, and doctors around the world in their efforts to respond to this crime against humanity. \u201d<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghai wrote on XPost: “The American and Israeli invaders attacked the Iranian Pasteur Institute, the oldest and most prestigious research and public health center in Iran and the entire Middle East, established in 1920 by an agreement between the Pasteur Institute in Paris and the Iranian government.”<\/p>\n
Mr Baggaei called the attack a “heartbreaking, cruel, despicable and completely outrageous act”.<\/p>\n
He did not say whether there were any casualties in the attack.<\/p>\n
The Institute was established more than 100 years ago in collaboration with the Institut Pasteur in Paris, an internationally renowned biomedical research center founded in 1887.<\/p>\n
Iranian laboratories conduct research into infectious diseases, produce vaccines and biological products, and provide advanced diagnostics.<\/p>\n
The center has played a central role in the fight against endemic diseases such as smallpox and cholera. It also supports Iran’s national immunization program by developing and producing vaccines and related biological products used against diseases such as tetanus, hepatitis B and measles.<\/p>\n
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote in an X post on Friday that two arms of Iran’s Pasteur Institute are also working closely with the WHO.<\/p>\n
\u201cConflicts in Iran and the region are impacting the delivery of health services and the safety of health workers, patients, and civilians in health facilities,\u201d Ghebreyesus wrote.<\/p>\n
“Since March 1, WHO has confirmed more than 20 attacks on Iranian healthcare, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people, including infectious disease health workers and members of the Iranian Red Crescent Society,” Ghebreyesus wrote in an X post.<\/p>\n
The damaged facilities include:<\/p>\n
A Red Crescent relief warehouse in Iran’s Bushehr province was attacked by a drone on Friday morning.<\/p>\n
No casualties were reported, but two aid containers, two buses and an emergency vehicle were destroyed in the attack, Fars news agency reported.<\/p>\n
On March 31, Israeli and US airstrikes hit one of Iran’s largest pharmaceutical companies in Tehran, the Iranian government said in a post on X.<\/p>\n
The company was later identified as Tofi Dal Research and Engineering Company, owned by the state-run holding company Social Security Investment Company. Tofigh Daru says on LinkedIn that his company develops and manufactures active pharmaceutical ingredients “from anti-cancer drugs, narcotics, and cardiovascular to immunomodulatory segments.”<\/p>\n
The number of casualties from this attack has not been confirmed.<\/p>\n
The newly built hospital in Tehran was heavily damaged in the March 29 attack on the capital, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) said.<\/p>\n
About 30 patients were admitted at the time of the strike late Monday, the hospital’s director told IRNA. The specific number of casualties related to the hospital was not reported.<\/p>\n
A hospital in Andimeshk, Iran’s Khuzestan province, was damaged in an explosion on March 21, according to Mehr and Fars news agencies.<\/p>\n
Ghebreyesus acknowledged the attack in a post on Friday, saying the facility was forced to evacuate staff and suspend services.<\/p>\n
Reports about the attack did not mention any casualties at the hospital.<\/p>\n
On March 2, Tehran’s Gandhi Hospital was damaged in an attack on a nearby television communications tower.<\/p>\n
As for the hospital itself, no confirmed casualties were reported.<\/p>\n
According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, international humanitarian law requires no attacks on health facilities or facilities, including hospitals.<\/p>\n
These protections also apply to transport for sick and injured people, medical staff, and ambulances.<\/p>\n
In 2016, UN Security Council Resolution 2286 was unanimously adopted. It condemns attacks on health care and calls on countries to respect international law.<\/p>\n
But last year saw record attacks on health care during armed conflicts, according to the WHO’s Health Attack Surveillance System (SSA).<\/p>\n
The SSA announced that 1,348 medical facilities have been attacked in armed conflicts around the world, resulting in 1,981 deaths. The majority of these deaths were in Sudan with 1,620 people killed, followed by Myanmar with 148 people killed.<\/p>\n
This is a sharp increase compared to 2024, when 944 patients and healthcare workers died in armed conflict.<\/p>\n
In addition to Iran, Israeli attacks have also targeted medical facilities in Lebanon.<\/p>\n
In the month since the latest bombing in Lebanon, Israel has killed 53 medical workers, destroyed 87 ambulances and medical centers, and forced the closure of five hospitals, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n
Runa Hamad, Lebanese medical coordinator for M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF), told Al Jazeera that “Israel’s strikes and general evacuation orders are cutting people off from health care and reducing the space in which health services can function,” adding that MSF has seen “a documented pattern of attacks affecting health care.”<\/p>\n
Throughout its genocidal war in Gaza, Israel has also attacked medical facilities in Palestinian enclaves.<\/p>\n
In October 2023, hundreds of people sheltering in the parking lot of Gaza’s al-Ahli hospital were killed in an Israeli attack, Palestinian health officials said.<\/p>\n
Israel claimed the explosion at the facility was the result of an unexploded rocket fired by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a claim denied by the militant group.<\/p>\n
In March 2024, the Israeli military announced that 90 people had been killed in an attack during a siege on al-Shifa Hospital, where displaced Palestinians had complained of long-term detention and ill-treatment.<\/p>\n
In December 2024, Israeli forces arrested Dr. Hassam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, for refusing to comply with an order to abandon one of the last functioning hospitals in northern Gaza. His arrest came a day after the military killed around 20 Palestinians and arrested around 240 people in an attack on a hospital, one of the “largest operations” ever carried out in the region.<\/p>\n
In March 2025, Israeli forces reportedly shot and killed 15 Palestinian doctors from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society and a clearly identifiable PRCS ambulance during a rescue operation in the Tal as-Sultan area of \u200b\u200bRafah.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
