That&#8217;s the main conclusion from a new study on the effects of different types of physical fitness on the risk of depression.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The research published in <em data-node-id=\"1.1.0\">Affective Disorders Journal<\/em>no similar association was found with cardiorespiratory fitness, raising all sorts of questions. Of course, this study does not mean that current treatments for depression should be abandoned. <em data-node-id=\"1.3\">or<\/em> Aerobic exercise focuses only on strength training. Alternatively, it can be a supplement to what you&#8217;re already doing.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">So why can building muscle help fight symptoms of depression? Experts break it down.<\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"watch-next\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-16\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"4.0\">Meet the experts: <\/strong>Dr. Amy Taylor, study co-author and senior research fellow in the Department of Surgery and Targeted Interventions, University College London. Michael Brustein, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in New York City. and Thea Gallagher, Ph.D., clinical associate professor of psychology at New York University Langone Health.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"body-h2 css-1q3hln2 emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"5.0\">What did the research find?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">For the study, researchers analyzed data from more than 341,000 adults aged 37 to 73 from the UK Biobank, a long-term biomedical database.<\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"editorial-link\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-17\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"embed\">\n<aside class=\"css-13bgmn2 e94w1mj12\">\n<h6 class=\"css-3zfazq e94w1mj10\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" data-theme-key=\"title-design-element-before\" class=\"css-13p2wp0 e68yk9k0\"\/><span class=\"css-8lle59 e94w1mj8\">Related articles<\/span><span aria-hidden=\"true\" data-theme-key=\"title-design-element-after\" class=\"css-0 e68yk9k1\"\/><\/h6>\n<\/aside>\n<\/section>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The researchers then used a technique called Mendelian randomization to exploit natural genetic differences between people to test for associations. &#8220;Because these genetic differences are randomly assigned at birth, this method helps overcome problems common in observational studies, such as confounding (when other factors such as education or diet may explain an apparent association) and reverse causation (when the direction of the relationship is unknown),&#8221; explains study co-author Dr. Amy Taylor, senior research fellow in the Department of Surgery and Targeted Interventions at University College London. &#8220;Here, we applied this approach to examine whether genetic predispositions to increased strength and fitness are associated with mental health outcomes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The researchers specifically looked at genetic variations associated with cardiovascular fitness and grip strength, which is used as a proxy for overall muscle strength. The team also looked at depression based on participants&#8217; self-reported medical histories and hospital records, as well as specific symptoms of depression (measured through questionnaires), to better understand participants&#8217; mental health.<\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"editorial-link\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-18\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"embed\">\n<aside class=\"css-q7kw09 e94w1mj3\">\n<div data-theme-key=\"carousel-container\" aria-roledescription=\"carousel\" role=\"region\" aria-live=\"off\" aria-labelledby=\"PP0-18-0\" class=\"css-1jke4yk ejxe6mr5\">\n<p><h2 id=\"PP0-18-0\" data-theme-key=\"carousel-hed\" class=\"css-4i2xvz ejxe6mr6\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" data-theme-key=\"title-design-element-before\" class=\"css-0 e68yk9k0\"\/>Strength training details<span aria-hidden=\"true\" data-theme-key=\"title-design-element-after\" class=\"css-1cyx3kf e68yk9k1\"\/><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/section>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">After analyzing the data, researchers found a significant association between higher grip strength and lower risk of depression. Specifically, for every 0.1kg increase in grip strength per kilogram of body weight, participants&#8217; risk of depression was estimated to decrease by 14%. Researchers found no association between having genetic markers for cardiorespiratory fitness and lower risk of depression or depressive symptoms.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Higher grip strength was also associated with a lower risk of certain depressive symptoms, such as a decreased ability to feel pleasure and changes in appetite. People with high grip strength also have a lower risk of depressed mood, extreme fatigue, and difficulty concentrating, all of which are associated with depression.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"body-h2 css-1q3hln2 emevuu60\">Women had stronger ties than men.<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Interestingly, Taylor&#8217;s team says they found &#8220;clear differences&#8221; between women and men in the extent to which muscle strength was associated with certain symptoms of depression.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">For women, a 0.1kg increase in grip strength per kilogram of body weight was associated with a 33% lower risk of not finding pleasure in activities, a 30% lower risk of feeling depressed, and a 26% lower risk of having problems concentrating. &#8220;In men, we found no clear evidence that similar increases in grip strength were associated with these symptoms,&#8221; Taylor says.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"body-h2 css-1q3hln2 emevuu60\">Why is muscle building effective for depression?<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Taylor said he was &#8220;somewhat surprised&#8221; that this particular study found little evidence that aerobic exercise can affect symptoms of depression, given that previous research has linked improved cardiorespiratory fitness to a lower risk of depression.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">She says it may reflect other factors, such as increased social support, which can prevent depression when doing aerobic exercise. Taylor also says that people are less likely to engage in physical activity or aerobic exercise when they are depressed, suggesting that reverse causation may be involved.<\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"editorial-link\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-19\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"embed\">\n<aside class=\"css-13bgmn2 e94w1mj12\">\n<h6 class=\"css-3zfazq e94w1mj10\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" data-theme-key=\"title-design-element-before\" class=\"css-13p2wp0 e68yk9k0\"\/><span class=\"css-8lle59 e94w1mj8\">Related articles<\/span><span aria-hidden=\"true\" data-theme-key=\"title-design-element-after\" class=\"css-0 e68yk9k1\"\/><\/h6>\n<\/aside>\n<\/section>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">But muscle strength can also act as a &#8220;biological buffer&#8221; against becoming lethargic and not finding pleasure in activities you once loved, says Michael Brustein, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in New York City.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cAerobic exercise is often a game of endurance. <em data-node-id=\"21.1\">endure<\/em> \u201cStrength is about agency, the ability to exercise power,\u201d he says. For people suffering from the mental paralysis of depression, the immediate tactile feedback of moving a heavy object provides a sense of self-efficacy that cannot be replicated on a long, leisurely walk. \u201d Being strong makes people feel less in control and more capable, he says.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"body-h2 css-1q3hln2 emevuu60\">What should I take home?<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Before you throw your cardio training plan out the window, wait a second. &#8220;This challenges the long-held idea that cardiovascular fitness promotes the risk of depression,&#8221; she says. &#8220;It&#8217;s consistent with the idea that aerobic exercise, or any physical activity, is good for mental health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Aerobic exercise has many mental health benefits, including reducing rumination. Doing aerobic exercise with others, such as in a group fitness class or running club, also has mental health benefits, adds Thea Gallagher, MD, clinical associate professor of psychology at New York University Langone Health.<\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"editorial-link\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-20\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"embed\">\n<aside class=\"css-q7kw09 e94w1mj3\"\/><\/section>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Ultimately, the findings support the need for strength training, but not at the expense of aerobic exercise. &#8220;While you shouldn&#8217;t abandon aerobic exercise, resistance training should be considered a non-negotiable mental health hygiene,&#8221; says Bluestein. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be a bodybuilder, just aim for two to three resistance training sessions per week to keep your strength neurologically \u201cactivated.\u201d \u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Gallagher agrees. &#8220;Don&#8217;t give up aerobic exercise completely,&#8221; she says. &#8220;The health benefits are many, but make lifting part of your daily routine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div data-journey-blur=\"partial\" data-ad-exclude=\"true\" class=\"css-19m4yzp e1jy25xv0\">\n<div class=\"css-sfzxfp ev8dhu59\"><span class=\"css-3mrz81 ev8dhu51\"><img src=\"https:\/\/golliza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Stronger-women-may-be-less-likely-to-develop-depression.file.png\" alt=\"Colin Miller's photo\" title=\"Colin Miller's photo\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"css-o0wq4v ev8dhu53\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1dsojn8 ev8dhu55\">\n<p>Colin Miller is a freelance writer specializing in general wellness, sexual health and relationships, and lifestyle trends, and his work has appeared in Men&#8217;s Health, Women&#8217;s Health, Self, Glamour, and more.
