The idea was that technology could solve the medical fax problem. <\/p>\n “I spent 12 years during and after medical school training to treat patients and make complex clinical decisions at some of the most difficult times in their lives,” Stecker, a cardiologist and professor at Oregon Health & Science University, said in an email. “What I didn’t sign up for was spending a third of my time on pre-approvals, chart preparation, and paperwork. Burnout is a systems failure that has real consequences, including increased medical errors, less time with patients, and doctors leaving the practice altogether.”<\/p>\n Insight has built a patient-facing AI assistant that accepts referrals, contacts patients to collect medical history, and schedules routine, low-risk procedures. The company is one of a number of venture-backed startups at the intersection of AI and healthcare that aim to improve efficiency in an industry that costs the U.S. an estimated $1 trillion a year to manage. Of course, this is an even more complex issue. The longer the backlog, the harder it is to clear it.
